At 11 A.M., protestors
held a rally outside the State House in Boston, Massachusetts, to
protest Governor Romney's budget cuts totalling 425 million dollars.
Among the items cut were pay raises for human service workers, social
programs to assist the mentally ill, and pay raises earmarked for
University of Massachusetts employees, among others. The gathering
consisted of human service workers (case managers, rehabilitation
specialists, and residential counselors) from various organizations,
persons served, and activists from NAMI (National Association for the
Mentally Ill). Also in attendance today was Gary Lamson, CEO of Vinfen
Corporation, one of the state's largest employers of human service
professionals.
Protestors began arriving at the State House around 10:30 A.M.
Organizers handed out various signs, saying "Restore the Salary
Reserve," and "Restore the Budget Cuts." At one point, motorists honked
their horns in support of the protestors, while they spilled across the
street, onto Boston Common. top
